Documentaries Take Center Stage!

Among non-fiction content, Documentaries emerge as the preferred genre across all age groups. While Drama and Comedy boast the highest average audience among fiction genres, Documentaries hold their ground, going head-to-head with blockbuster categories like Action and surpassing other popular genres like Sci-Fi. South Africa, Sweden, and Turkey emerge as the top three countries with the highest preference for documentary content in the region.

When it comes to FAST channel consumption, while Sports takes the lead as the most preferred genre among non-fiction contents, Documentaries secure the third spot in the EMEA region with a notable 27% preference.

Documentary Availability Across EMEA

Since 2002, the release of documentary titles has been on a steady climb. The standout years were 2019 and 2020. However, post-peak, it has faced a sustained decline.

Considering that the users are still interested in the genre, it would appear that the offer does not cover the current demand for documentaries.Leading the charge in the EMEA region, the UK, France and Germany emerged as frontrunners, boasting the highest number of local original documentary productions. It’s a testament to their storytelling expertise and commitment to enriching the documentary scenery.

FAST emerges as an oasis for documentary enthusiasts. Notably, the UK and France also stand out in FAST, providing the greatest number of channels for this captivating genre.

Top-Rated Documentaries in EMEA

Among the most talked-about documentary series, there’s a clear preference for content exploring the marvels of nature and the wonders of the universe. On the other hand, documentary series with the highest viewership focus on diverse and insightful biographies, ranging from the lives of professional athletes like David Beckham to intriguing mysteries such as Natalia Grace, initially assumed to be a 6-year-old orphan with a rare bone growth disorder, she was later revealed to be a full-grown adult.

Shifting to documentaries movies, there’s a significant presence of films delving into the behind-the-scenes of memorable series and movies. Additionally, there are also some gripping stories of catastrophes and tales of animal resilience.

From Legacy to Leading Edge: How AWS Helped Us Put AI at the Heart of Xytech

The title of our panel was deliberately chosen: Adding AI Layers to Modernize Legacy Product Offerings. There’s a misconception in the market that AI is only for greenfield startups building from scratch. That’s simply not true. In many ways, companies with deep domain expertise and established customer relationships are better positioned to deliver meaningful AI solutions—because they understand the problem space intimately. Xytech has decades of domain knowledge in media operations baked into its architecture. The AWS engagement didn’t just help us bolt AI onto an old product—it helped us unlock the latent value in our platform in ways that solved larger challenges we’d been wrestling with for years. That’s the real magic: AI as an accelerant for domain expertise, not a replacement for it.
